BCD'S PEOPLE WHO ROCK - RYAN STURT
By Dustin D'Addato
Few people that I have ever met are as comfortable and happy with who they are than Ryan Sturt. Most of us do what we think people want us to do, or what we think is, for lack of a better term, cool. We may not all admit it to ourselves, but most of us live our lives worrying about how others see us. Trying to impress others. Ryan Sturt is not one of those people. That’s not to say that Ryan does not impress people every day, but it’s because he’s just being himself. That’s why Ryan is this week’s BCD Person Who Rocks.
“My New Year's resolution (is) to be awesome. What would be the awesome choice? What should I do in order to be awesome?” he says. From any other person that might sound obnoxious. From Ryan it’s just honest. It’s that kind of attitude that informs everything that he does, and he does a lot. Ryan told us about how he is, “working on a couple things,” including, “my improv group Gunshow. I'm acting in Lou Fernandez's Channel 102 series Fugitive Chef as Detective Sturt, the cop obsessed with catching the chef. Cakey is another series on Channel 102 that I'm working on. Cakey is this very realistic cake puppet that can shoot lasers out of his eyes and transform objects. I'm playing guitar in a few songs for Terry Jinn's ETV live music show, I perform in The Project once in a while with Weiner Dog, writing my own Channel 102 series (to be shot when it's good and ready), and Adam Nowak and I are in talks about making a two person improv duo.”
One of the most impressive things about everything that he is doing, is that he is doing them all well. “My feeling is that there's not enough time to mess around. If I'm someplace to develop a show and work on it, I'm there to do that. A job well done is more satisfactory to me than making a party of something,” explains Ryan. His cousin Josh adds, “It isn't necessarily a matter of perfectionism, but more about resolve to meeting the goal. He has pride in his work. Anything worth doing is worth doing well.” Ryan’s friend Ron agrees but adds that in addition to being “a focused, talented, ambitious, confident, sing-songy dance-a-holic, and he's got that killer fucking beard.”
Ryan ups his awesome level when dealing with his friends: “Good friends can read a thousand words in a single glance. It's good to be understood. My good friends give me the time to be heard and respect my feelings and opinions on anything, so I can respect and hear their thoughts. I know a good friend when there's no limit to that.” I’ve seen Ryan go above and beyond for those close to him. From helping produce his cousin’s music video to just making sure that he calls his friends just to stay in touch, it is clear that Ryan give of himself whenever his friends need him. His friend Eric explains how his loyalty has no limits, “Ryan is one of my closest and dearest friends. He always tells me the truth about things, and will always lend an ear when I need council. In my darkest of hours he has always leant me a flashlight, and will speed home to log on to WOW when I am being ganked by a bunch of Allied Hunters.” But his mother Joyce is a little concerned he may be too caring, claiming, “He's going to make someone a great husband because he works so hard at a relationship. Then again, given his track record with the women, maybe he works too hard.”
But the most awesome thing about Ryan is that he is a nerd. Yeah, I never thought I would write that sentence either, but it’s true. Try having a conversation with Ryan without him making a reference to come online game or other D&D sounding thing. Go ahead try it. It’s not going to happen. Ryan is and always will have a connection to the guy he was 13. Most people are afraid of that side of them. Ryan embraces it. You can’t help but respect that. To strip away all the fear of being judged by others and being looked down on, and just be who you want to be. Could there be anything more rocking? I submit there is not. That’s why Ryan Sturt is this week’s person who rocks.
